Fiat will replace its Seicento with a new minicar to appear in late 2007.

The new model will be called the 500, named after its famous predecessor, the 1957 500, the icon of Italian basic transportation.

The new 500 will be inspired by the Trepiuno 3 1 concept car that Fiat unveiled in March 2004 at the Geneva auto show. The vehicle will be a three-door, four-seat hatchback about 3300mm long.

Fiat plans to build about 100,000 units a year. The new 500 will be based on a shortened version of the Panda platform.

The Italian automaker will build the new 500 in Poland in its Tychy plant, which already makes the Seicento and the Panda.
