Ford was pretty desperate when in September 1998 it signed a deal to make diesel engines with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen.
At that time, diesels accounted for less than one-fourth of European new-car sales but were poised to grow dramatically.
Ford had few competitive diesels on the road and needed help.
Today, diesels represent nearly half of Europe's new-car sales. And thanks to its co-sourcing with PSA, Ford is among Europe's front-runners when it comes to diesels.
