For years, the car industry has published fuel consumption figures. And since the 1990s European carmakers have voluntarily pledged to cut CO2 exhaust emissions.
The fuel consumption figures are measured by standardized test cycles for better comparability. This creates transparency within the industry and allows car buyers to choose a vehicle based on facts. Many consumers do so, consciously buying cars that emit less CO2, a gas linked to global warming.
