Shaken by the quality problems that have tarnished its image, Mercedes-Benz took extensive measures to make sure its new S-class upper-premium sedan would be glitch-free. So says Hans Multhaupt, vice president for program management and development at the Mercedes-Benz Car Group. Multhaupt, 56, heads development for the S-class, SL, Maybach and SLK cars. He's also responsible for the all-wheel-drive versions of the S-, E- and C-class cars, as well as active safety for all Mercedes models.

He discussed S-class quality with Reporter Diana T. Kurylko.
