Europe's top-selling car for January is ... unclear.

Based on individual model sales, the Ford Focus was the best seller in the first month.

Ford sold 40,362 units of the lower-medium car, up 8 percent from the January 2005, according to sales data from UK-based market researcher JATO Dynamics for 27 countires in Europe. (See table, Page 22)

But the Volkswagen Golf wins the January sales race by 513 units if sales of the Golf Plus are combined with sales of the car's hatchback and station wagon versions. The Golf Plus is a high-roof variant of the lower-medium model.

Without adding the Golf Plus, the Golf finished January No. 6 in sales.
