Porsche has returned to open prototype racing to boost its standing among race fans and to promote the transfer of racing technology to its production cars.
The Penske Racing team is using a Porsche prototype called the RS Spyder in the LMP2 category of the US-based American Le Mans Series.
In the first American Le Mans Series event of 2006 in Sebring, Florida, on March 18, the RS Spyder finished second in its category.
Porsche's return to prototype racing after a nine-year absence was spearheaded by its North American subsidiary.
