Michelin wants tires to be rated according to their environmental performance.

"Tires should be ranked according to their energy efficiency," said Didier Miraton, Michelin's head of research in an interview.

Miraton says automakers are watching keenly the development of more efficient tires because they need to find ways to cut cars' fuel consumption, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
