Edouard Michelin changed the way people view his family's business during his six years as head of the tire maker.

"He brought the company a breath of fresh air while keeping with the family tradition for quality," said Noel Goutard, former chairman of French supplier Valeo.

Said David Weill, a principal at consultant A.T. Kearney in Paris: "He brushed up the company's brand image."

Michelin died in a boating accident in western France on May 26. He was 42.
