Shoppers in China's small cities are snapping up new cars. The result is a 61.9 percent increase in auto sales in the first four months of this year.

Boosted by a Passat designed specifically for China, Volkswagen surged, topping General Motors in the race for market leadership.

"The China market is running well above our expectations. I'm amazed by the April data," says Ashvin Chotai, director of Asian automotive industry research at Global Insight in London.
