BMW's lean manufacturing model owes its success partly to the flexible working agreements fostered by Ernst Baumann. The company's human resources director is responsible for innovative and flexible solutions that allow the carmaker to easily shift model production and workers between the company's different plants.

Baumann is also responsible for hiring a diverse group of employees for its Leipzig plant, which opened last May.
