Renault and Nissan saved almost [euro]100 million by sharing a small-car platform.

Nissan's European Micra and Japan-market March share a common platform with Renault's Clio III. In all, 11 vehicles use that platform.

Nissan estimates it costs 20 billion yen to 30 billion yen ([euro]134 million to [euro]201 million) to develop a new model.

"The savings could be almost half that" for joint development, says Kimiyasu Nakamura, Nissan senior vice president of small-car product development. By his count, 48 percent.
