Jacques Prost will become head of Renault's Paris-based powertrain engineering division January 1.
Currently, Prost, 53, is vice president for Renault's small cars program.
Prost was project manager for the third-generation Clio small-segment car.
Prost succeeds Kazumasa Katoh, who has headed the French carmaker's powertrain engineering unit since 2001.
Katoh, a longtime Nissan executive, returns to Japan to take an unspecified post with Nissan.
