One key to the future of alternative fuels is getting them to the public, and European oil companies may speed that process.

Some have established alternative energy divisions. British Petroleum advertises a "Beyond Petroleum" approach. Royal Dutch Shell and Sasol Chevron are linked with Volkswagen, Renault and DaimlerChrysler to make synthetic fuels made from natural gas, coal and biomass. (See related story, this page)

Elf and Total distribute fuel blends in France, while Repsol YPF and Cepsa are investing in biofuel production in Spain.
