European automakers are promoting biofuel mixes as one way to meet pending EU CO2 reduction goals. But their challenges include production costs and convincing consumers of the benefits of biofuels, mainly crop-based bioethanol and biodiesel blends.

Penetration of biofuels in Europe is 1.4 percent. But interest is increasing as the cost of fossil fuels remains unpredictable. First-generation biofuels are made from rapeseed and soy (biodiesels); sugar beets, distilled corn and organic products (bioethanol).
