News that Mercedes-Benz wants a joint-venture partner to share the development costs of its next generation A- and B-class models (Automotive News Europe, October 16) suggests a refreshing new business reality at DaimlerChrysler headquarters in Stuttgart.

Like D/C's Smart and Maybach products, the current A class and its predecessor were products of a more elitist era. Technically clever, they were conceived as much to demonstrate the superiority of Mercedes engineering as to answer customer needs.
