Amid falling production schedules by General Motors, Ford Motor and the Chrysler group, Dura Automotive Systems has sought US Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The supplier's debts total $1.73 billion (about [euro]1.35 billion).
CEO Larry Denton said the move was in the best interest of employees, customers, vendors and other interested parties.
Dura is the seventh US auto parts supplier to file for Chapter 11 this year. At least 36 automotive partsmakers and two vehicle haulers have sought protection since 1999.
