The abrupt, surprising departure of Bernd Pischetsrieder as chairman of Volkswagen shows the effect of the continuous infighting at the remote Wolfsburg automaker.
It certainly is a messy, public leadership succession. In March, Pischetsrieder's job was in grave doubt. Labor unions objected to his cost-cutting plans and his tenure was publicly questioned by VW Supervisory Board Chairman Ferdinand Piech.
Pischetsrieder, 58, won that round when he got a five-year contract extension in May.
