European car manufacturing was far more volatile last year than a modest 2.1 percent gain suggests. Big swings at Renault and Fiat illustrate that vividly. (See table, Page 27)

Fiat group's European production rebounded strongly after a string of losing years, up 229,441 units or 21.1 percent to 1.31 million units. That pushed Fiat past both DaimlerChrysler and BMW to No. 6 among European automakers, according to data from market researcher J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting.
