For France's carmakers, it's time to go back to basics. They need to improve their products to regain their traditionally strong position in Europe's volume car market.

Both PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, Europe's second-largest car group by unit sales after Volkswagen group, and Renault, Europe's No. 5 automaker, have embarked on campaigns to build better, more attractive cars. If their strategies succeed, that should help stem a recent decline in sales and profitability.
