When top executives of Europe's automakers meet this week in Geneva, they should ignore everything on the agenda except repairing the split in their united approach to Brussels.

Through their ACEA trade association, Europe-based auto manufacturers have long maintained a more or less solid unity in lobbying for their industry. They compete strenuously against each other, but the industry has traditionally pulled together on legislation and regulation.
