As automakers seek more flexible plants to make production match rapidly changing demand, Germany-based Durr is providing a new approach to manufacturing.

The Stuttgart production-equipment supplier has developed an alternative to permanently installed final assembly lines that must be custom-designed and built in place. Its FAStplant system uses standardized, pre-tested modules built in its factories and assembled on-site in hours with quick snap-together connections for power, control, lighting and compressed-air sub-systems.
