More carmakers to offer stop-start; VW, Opel and Toyota consider technology to help reduce CO2 emissions.(News)

Volkswagen, Opel and Toyota soon could join Citroen and BMW in selling cars with fuel-saving stop-start.

"Our prediction is that in five years start-stop may be as common as ABS or electronic stability control," Wolfgang Steiger, head of VW powertrain research, told Automotive News Europe.

VW and Toyota have in the past sold cars with stop-start systems but stopped because of poor sales. Currently Citroen is the only volume carmaker that offers cars with stop-start systems.

Beginning this spring, BMW will offer stop-start as a standard feature in many BMW 1-series entry-premium models with manual transmissions. The technology will be added to BMW's other model lines later.
