Movies as a Basic Cable Money Maker NEW YORK - From an economic perspective, the purchase of movies by basic cable networks is continuing to pay off in terms of helping to increase advertising revenue and subscriber base. And even the pre-syndication rights deals made by USA Network and Lifetime are obviously envisioned by both networks as being potentially heavy profit-makers, although the arrangements with the suppliers represent a substantial financial investment in the networks' economic future.

Still, there are skeptics - competitors, obviously, and some MSOs - who question the financial wisdom behind such huge expenditures and who point to hard business realities that tend to shake the two nets out of their field of dreams. But Wall...
