So. Bell Gets Okay For Fiber Net TALLAHASSEE, FL -- The Florida Public Service Commission has cast its lot with Southern Bell Telephone (SBT) designs for an Information Age network to serve the businesses and residents of Florida, and at the same time dealt a sturdy blow to the cable TV industry and to consumer advocates.
The PSC ignored its own staff's recommendation, which was to grant the BellSouth subsidiary a mere $34 million in new intrastate depreciation expenses, and instead gave SBT almost 80 percent of what it requested, roughly $119.5 million per year based on January 1 investment. The new charges will help accelerate SBT deployment of broadband fiber-to-the-curb and to-the-home, literally laying the groundwork for SBT to compete...
