Redstone's Inside Buys Puzzle Viacom Watchers
NEW YORK -- When a corporate official keeps going to the market to buy stock in his company, Wall Street usually applauds the vote of confidence and jumps in to buy a few shares for themselves. But the unusual activity of Viacom Inc. chairman Sumner Redstone leaves even close followers of the company puzzled, and even a bit worried.
It's not that Redstone is selling shares in the company, owner of cable systems Showtime Networks Inc. and MTV Networks. On the contrary. As insiders go, he's one of the most active buyers of any company in the country. But while the number of trades is unusually large -- more than 140 so far in 1990 -- the size of the purchases is quite small.
