Malone Gives Nod to Fiber ANAHEIM, Calif. -- If any operators attending the Western Cable Show had lingering doubts about the strategic value of optical fiber technology, those doubts were dispelled at the show. Tele-Communications Inc. CEO John Malone talked enthusiastically about what fiber -- which he said can now be installed for about $7,000 a mile -- has meant in strategic terms.
Where he once thought direct-broadcast satellites might rival terrestrial cable TV networks as a delivery mechanism, Malone has done an about face.
