Pacific Bell Gets FCC Waiver To Bolt Cable WASHINGTON -- Pacific Bell, one of the first Bell companies to get into the cable business, was given permission by the FCC last week to get out by selling its 471-mile, 18,000-subscriber system in Palo Alto, Calif., to a cable cooperative there for $18.7 million.

Because Pacific Bell will partially finance the venture, it needed to obtain a waiver of the FCC's telephone-cable cross-ownership rules. The FCC gave the telco a limited, one-year waiver to complete the purchase agreement and to continue to maintain the cable facility to ensure a smooth transition.
