Infomercial Group Approves Guidelines In an effort to avoid government regulation, makers of infomercial -- those program-length advertisements -- issued voluntary guidelines last week even as they acknowledged having little power to enforce them. "We can only depend on the aid and cooperation of the various media entities on making this thing work.
They are the gatekeepers," said Thomas Fenton, president of the National Infomercial Marketing Association. Fenton acknowledged that the association has "zero enforcement power." But it will apply pressure, he said, by monitoring infomercials, warning members who violate the guidelines, expelling them if there's no change after six months and recommending some infomercials to the Federal Trade...
