Hubbard Has Hughes Bird In Hand U.S. Satellite Broadcasting and Hughes Communications Inc. have concluded an agreement worth over $100 million under which Hughes will build and operate a direct-broadcast satellite and USSB will own and program five of its 16 120-watt transponders. An ecstatic Stanley S.

Hubbard, USSB chairman, calculated that it had taken him 10 years and one month to obtain a firm deal for capacity on a high-power bird: "Three thousand, six hundred and eighty-five days from the day we filed our application for DBS with the FCC, the deal is done."
