NEW YORK -- As production budgets for both broadcast and cable networks become increasingly squeezed, independent producers are called upon more and more to deliver programs quickly and inexpensively. While operators pressure the cable networks to keep a lid on license fees, network programmers and independent producers maintain that cable continues to be the bastion of lean-and-mean efficiency, at least in programming.

This is in part due to the role played by independent producers, who are being called upon increasingly to fuel the creative tank, as well as to bring programs in as cheaply as possible.
