Hughes Chooses Thomson for DBS Units NEW YORK - Thomson Consumer Electronics is Hughes Communications Inc.'s choice to supply a digital video compression system, receivers and 18-inch antennas for Hughes' high-power direct-broadcast satellite system, set to launch in early 1994. Thomson will invest $50 million to develop the receiver/antenna package in exchange for exclusive manufacturing rights for 18 months or until 1 million units have been sold, whichever comes first.
After that, other companies will become licensed manufacturers. The package will be distributed under the brand name RCA and retail for no more than $700, Thomson officials said, although installation fees may increase that price slightly. Signal security will be handled by News...
