Thomson Consumer Electronics has contracted with San Jose, Calif.-based Compression Labs Inc. (CLI) to develop and manufacture and encoder for the compressed digital video system Thomson is developing for Hughes Communications Inc. A spokeswoman for CLI said the $5 million contract consisted of up $1.5 million in development funding and a promise to purchase up to $3.5 million-worth of the units.

The monies would be spent through 1993. Spokespersons for all three companies said they were unsure about the total number of units Thomson would need. The system will enable compression of a minimum of four video signals into a single channel and will be based on the public domain MPEG digital compression standard with some Thomson enhancements, CLI...
