Telephony over fiber-coax set in U.K. (TeleWest's fiber/coaxial telephone services)

TeleWest, the joint venture of Tele-Communications Inc. and U S West Inc. in the United Kingdom, has contracted for the first commercial deployment of technology permitting delivery of telephone services over a fiber/coaxial network. AT&T Bell Laboratories and Optical Networks International are developing what they call a Cable Loop Carrier System for delivery to TeleWest starting in the first or second quarter of 1993, with initial installations covering 10,000 households.
