Telephony over fiber-coax set in U.K. (TeleWest's fiber/coaxial telephone services)

TeleWest, the joint venture of Tele-Communications Inc. and U S West Inc. in the United Kingdom, has contracted for the first commercial deployment of technology permitting delivery of telephone services over a fiber/coaxial network. AT&T Bell Laboratories and Optical Networks International are developing what they call a Cable Loop Carrier System for delivery to TeleWest starting in the first or second quarter of 1993, with initial installations covering 10,000 households.
According to Terry Collins, vice president of business development at TeleWest, the new approach to delivering phone and cable services will probably become standard procedure in the majority of the firm's systems, assuming the equipment works as expected. Officials of the...
