FCC rings Cox's number on PCS preference. (Cox Enterprises Inc.; personal communications services)

BUT DECISION ISN'T FINAL WASHINGTON -- Cox Enterprises Inc. and two other companies were tentatively awarded pioneer's preferences for personal communications services by the Federal Communications Commission last Thursday. If the FCC makes the decision final, the three companies, which were selected from a pool of 53 contestants, will be given a considerable boost over potential competitors in the evolving PCS business.

That's because the three companies will be guaranteed a license to provide PCS. The FCC, which has not begun licensing PCS providers, is currently writing rules in this area.
