After more than a year of discussions, Bay Area cable operators, anchored by the efforts of Viacom Cable and Tele-Communications Inc., the leading operators in the region, are close to announcing plans for construction of a Bay Area optical fiber interconnect. "We'll be able to say something in about a month," said Del Heller, Viacom Cable's engineering vice president.

Viacom officials have intended all along to build a fiber interconnect linking the company's area systems, creating a "superheadend" that would feed signals out to each of the operating units.
