Baby Bell challenges '84 Cable Act provision. (Bell Atlantic Corp.; Cable Communications Policy Act of 1984)

Bell Atlantic beat the drums for telco video louder than ever last week with the filing of a court challenge to the cross-ownership prohibition of the 1984 Cable Act in Virginia and the announcement of another video dial tone deal in New Jersey. The regional Bell Operating company asked a federal court to remove legal barriers to telco ownership and provision of cable TV programming so that it could proceed with construction of a switched digital fiber network in Alexandria, Va., that would carry services supplied by a new affiliated firm, Bell Atlantic Video Services Co.
At the same time, the RBOC said a startup company, FutureVision of America, had agreed to be a provider of TV services on a fiber network to be constructed starting next year in Toms...
