Basic cable networks last week endorsed the recent National Cable Television Association study on violence in original cable programming. Many services, however, were careful to note that they already have standards and practices in place -- although those standards widely vary. In a four-point plan that accompanied the study, NCTA president James Mooney called for cable and broadcast programmers to meet and discuss the issue and for individual networks to come up with written standards by the end of the year.

Cable programmers are clear on one point: Any attempt to set an industrywide standard will meet resistance. Programmers believe that their autonomy is essential to developing programming that allows them to differentiate their product. ...
