Nets take their mark as race for '96 Olympics begins. (Television networks bidding for broadcasting rights for 1996 Summer Olympics)

NEW YORK - The race for the 1996 Summer Olympics TV rights has already begun, with broadcast networks talking with basic cable networks about forming alliances before the bidding for rights begins. Sources said CBS Sports is talking to a number of cable services, including USA Network.

Capital Cities/ABC Inc., owner of this newspaper, is in ongoing discussions with Turner Broadcasting System Inc. Both networks hope to find cable partners to help foot the financial burdens of a Summer Olympics package that could cost between $400 million and $600 million. A CBS spokeswoman said the network, which currently holds the television rights to the 1994 Winter Olympics, is talking to "a number of cable entities" concerning an alliance prior to placing its bid...
