Although Playboy Television's pay-per-view business is growing sharply, the company's three-year-long push away from subscription pay cable has not yet generated big gains for the network.
Recent disclosures by Playboy Enterprises Inc. show that revenues from the company's cable TV sales have been relatively stagnant since fiscal 1990, with average monthly revenue climbing less than 3 percent a year.
Now, after allowing its monthly pay business to erode in favor of PPV, Playboy has decided to put energy into marketing the subscription side of its adult cable network.
But the company still sees strong opportunities in PPV, pointing to MSOs' plans to sharply expand channel capacity through signal compression and fiber optics.
