The race to make integrated circuits for the digital cable subscriber marketplace officially begins today.

That's when Philips Consumer Electronics Co. (CEC) and LSI Logic Corp. are expected to announce they are co-developing "several" compressed digital video integrated-circuit applications, including cable set-top decoders.

By the third quarter of this year, LSI Logic, a Fortune 500 manufacturer of microprocessing semiconductors, said it will begin production of a video decoder chip set, ramping up to a heavier output by early 1994 -- a time line parallel to that proposed by General Instrument Corp. and AT&T.
