U.S. nets eye DTH options to News Corp., Canal Plus. (direct-to-home European cable television service)

CANNES, France -- Representatives of several key U.S. programming companies met privately here last week to consider developing a viable option to having to align themselves with Rupert Murdoch and Canal Plus, Europe's two dominant pay-TV providers.

At an Oct. 13 meeting at the MIPCOM international programming market here, representatives from companies ranging from Viacom Inc. and Turner Broadcasting System Inc. to Landmark Communications and Hughes Communications Inc. met with officials from France Telecom and Eutelsat.
