WASHINGTON -- Viacom Inc. chairman Summer Redstone hammered on an absent TeleCommunications Inc. CEO John Malone at a Senate antitrust subcommittee hearing last Wednesday, forcing Bell Atlantic Corp. CEO Raymond Smith to fend off charges that a combined Bell Atlantic-TCI would spell disaster for competitors and consumers.

Smith was repeatedly left to defend the business practices of the giant TCI, as Redstone and Paramount Communications Inc. CEO Martin Davis denounced, in Davis' words, "the extraordinary market power amassed by the cable forces who are an integral part of the QVC lineup."
