LONDON -- Playboy Enterprises Inc.'s disappointing earnings report Nov. 4 bemoaned the "weak advertising market," "industrywide softness in news-stand sales" and "the effects of cable re-regulation." Indeed, most of the company's domestic U.S. news of late has focused on losses, layoffs and belt-tightening.

In international TV, however, things have been hopping for Playboy. The company recently struck two major international deals to start mini-networks in Europe, one with Italian pay-TV network Telepiu and another with Gamma Communications' Canal Hollywood, a premium channel about to launch in Spain. Both involve scheduling two-hour blocks of Playboy programming seven nights a week. And the agreements come on the heels of a major international pact...
