Cox Communications wins big PCS victory at FCC. (Cox Enterprises Inc.; personal communications services)

WASHINGTON -- After being thrown what looked like a regulatory curve ball back in October, Cox Enterprises Inc. and two other companies secured the first batch of personal communications service licenses through a special process at the Federal Communications Commission.

The FCC awarded the lucrative licenses on Dec. 23 through its pioneer's preference program, giving Cox, American Personal Communications and Omnipoint Communications Inc. a nearly six-month lead on competitors, who will have to secure PCS licenses through an auction slated to begin in May.
