Sizzling summer for cable? (cable TV industry) (Editorial)

As this issue of Multichannel News attests, pre-Fourth of July fireworks erupted last week on all fronts, setting the stage for what could be a very explosive summer. The week kicked off last Monday when the Supreme Court sort of acted, ruling that cable operators do have First Amendment rights.

Unfortunately, to the disappointment of cable operators and programmers, the high court kicked back the must-carry decision to the lower courts, which will drag the process out for at least another year. But the good news is that the high court asserted that cable operators have First Amendment rights, and the lower courts will have to address that the next time around.
