Scientific-Atlanta licenses DigiCipher access, encryption. (Scientic-Atlanta INc.)

Scientific-Atlanta Inc. last week further strengthened its role in the digital arena with an agreement to license General Instrument Corp.'s DigiCipher II access and control components and digital compression system. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The deal with GI enables S-A to provide compatible digital equipment for cable operators in line for DigiCipher equipment, as well as operators seeking digitally compressed signal packs from Tele-Communications Inc.'s headend-in-the-sky venture, which is slated to use GI's DigiCipher II technology.

Zenith Electronics Corp. and Hewlett-Packard are also licensed for DigiCipher I technology. Chip makers Motorola Inc., LSI Logic and C-Cube Microsystems are slated to make dual-mode MPEG-2/DigiCipher II...
