MTV: Music Television might get help from the U.S. Department of Justice in fending off the record industry's forthcoming music video channel. Sources from the major record companies involved in the startup channel and sources close to MTV have confirmed that the Justice Department's antitrust division is in the midst of an investigation to determine whether the creation of the MTV competitor raises any collusion, price-fixing or group boycott issues.

Five of the world's largest music companies -- Warner Music Group, Sony Software Corp., PolyGram Holdings Inc., EMI Music and Bertelsmann Music Group -- had previously announced plans to launch a music video service with Ticketmaster Corp. Launch of the channel has been delayed from late 1994 to early 1995....
