AT&T will combine FTTC, HFT designs. (fiber-to-the-curb; hybrid fiber/coax)
Multichannel News, November, 1994 by Dawson, Fred
Broadband Technologies Inc. and various units of AT&T Corp. have developed a way to lower costs of fiber-rich networks while supporting delivery of digital video in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) to the home. The cornerstone of the effort is new technology that allows use of existing twisted-pair copper plant for ATM transport over the last 500 feet from the optical termination point, greatly expanding the number of households served from each node, said Rick Jones, co-founder and executive vice president of technology for BBT.
In addition, Jones said, BBT can passively combine analog and digital signals at or close to the home, permitting use of coaxial plant for traditional cable services and eliminating the need for digital conversion at the set-top...
