Broadband Technologies Inc. and various units of AT&T Corp. have developed a way to lower costs of fiber-rich networks while supporting delivery of digital video in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) to the home. The cornerstone of the effort is new technology that allows use of existing twisted-pair copper plant for ATM transport over the last 500 feet from the optical termination point, greatly expanding the number of households served from each node, said Rick Jones, co-founder and executive vice president of technology for BBT.
