WASHINGTON -- Ben Hooks deserves cable's Eternal Optimist award. "We just bought 50 more systems. I don't know if I'm crazy or not," said Hooks, president of Friendship Cable in Tyler, Texas. Ben Hooks has been the owner of a small operator for nearly two decades. Prior to the deal that caused him to pick up 34,000 new subscribers, Friendship controlled 190 systems scattered among eight states in the South and Southwest.

Hooks is upbeat about his growth strategy, confident that digital compression will keep him competitive without having to pay for expensive upgrades.
