Nevada telcos will fight PSC de-reg plan. (Nevada telephone companies; Public Service Commission; deregulation)

The Nevada telephone industry may bypass a Public Service Commission deregulation proposal and take its case directly to the state legislature, sources close to the situation said last week. Local exchange carriers are considering the move as a way of scuttling a PSC plan that would impose even more regulations on the industry, said Steve Tackes, spokesman for the Nevada Telephone Association.
"We haven't decided, but we know that option is still open to us," Tackes said. "We haven't ruled it out." A shift to the legislative arena would delay making Nevada the 10th state to open its local telephone market to full competition by the end of February. Tackes said that NTA officials would meet in the coming weeks to decide whether to pursue deregulation...
